My Craft Beer Anniversary!

31 Aug

I could have gestated a baby in the time that has passed since my last blog post. Let me spare you the expense and just clear that up… I did NOT have a baby in the past  nine months, but I HAVE severely neglected this lovely little blog. Continue reading

Big Apple Beer Scene

6 Mar

BIG news, folks… The Hops Honey has been published!!!!

I recently wrote an article for a kick ass new magazine – Philly Beer Scene – on the beer scene here in NYC.  The idea was to highlight great bars for beer in the city for Philly connoisseurs who might be inclined to take a day or weekend trip up to NY.

So, without further ado, I present to you… the first article published by yours truly! 🙂

To Half or not to Half… that is the question!

6 Oct

My friend Tim made two very good arguments the other day for sometimes having half beers, and I thought I’d share them!

Numero uno:

With all the craft beer makers out there trying to distinguish themselves with a gazillion different flavors in the beers, it can sometimes get a bit overwhelming… and what is enjoyable at first sip can become too much by the end of a full pint.  But, a half beer (which, btw, most ‘good’ bars will offer if you ask!) will let you enjoy the brewers creativity without risking overexposure!

Numero dos:

ABV – it’s just too much!!! lol  These beers are definitely yummy and there’s SO much great stuff out there that we want to try, but at 6, 7, 8… 11% Alcohol By Volume??? No way, man!  Especially not on a school night!  If you’re not familiar, lemme s’plain it to you…

Bud Light – 4.2% ABV

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale – 5.7% ABV

Stone IPA – 6.9% ABV

Bigger %age = more alcohol = you’re getting drunk a heckuva lot quicker… so while knocking back 3 Bud Lights might be fine for you… the same 3 Stone IPAs might literally knock you on your arse… so be careful 😉

Bottom line?  where there’s either a high percentage and/or potentially strong flavors afoot, have it…. but halve it 😉

So, I’m not starting my beer blog necessarily with a piece about a great beer hall, or my love of beer, or necessarily even the “great” beer that they serve here, because truly they’re not known for their beer… but I have to give credit to the local pub that I truly believe every beer drinker needs to have.  For me, that place is the Four-Faced Liar, and even as I type this, I’m sitting outside on a glorious late summer Sunday afternoon, having a simple Bud Light draft, and I couldn’t be happier.  Well, I could be I suppose, if they decided to put Sierra Nevada back on tap! 🙂
