FL > NYC Roadtrip, Part 4 – Dogfish Head!

26 Nov

Step 1: drive from 11am – 11pm

Step 2: sample Raleigh’s awesome craft beer scene for 3 hours

Step 3: get about 4 hours of sleep

Step 4: struggle to get your lazy, tired ass out of bed to hit the road again…..

Ugh, I mean, Saturday night in Raleigh was *super* fun, but Sunday morning in Raleigh was, not… lol

We were super tired from day one of our roadtrip, and the previous evening’s revelries, so motivating the following morning was rough… but we managed to find a Dunkin Donuts that was open, grab some coffee, Gatorade (praise the lord), and sustanance! This particular D&D was also a bit of a trip down memory lane for me… not the exact shop, but the fact that they haven’t updated their interior since, roughly, 1985! When I was little, my mom would take me to D&D in NJ before school sometimes, and they had a counter where you could sit, with these great, orange stools! I used to love sitting up there 🙂 I hadn’t seen one since I was about 5 years old… until…

Anyone else remember these?!?! Love it 🙂

Anywho, we headed out of Raleigh – with me giving Jayd a bit of a respite from the driving – & headed North to our first target… the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel! Neither one of us had ever been through this “engineering wonder” before… & for those of you who are also unfamiliar with this marvel, it is both a bridge AND a tunnel that splits the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic, connecting “Virginia’s Eastern Shore with the Virginia mainland at Virginia Beach near Norfolk.”

So… over and under the water we went!

Can you see the break in the bridge, where we had to go down into the tunnel?!?! How cool is that?! 🙂

Here are some fancy pictures of the bridge-tunnel from their website… so you can ooh and ahh…

We then drove North up route 13 into Delaware… and straight to Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats! Unfortunately, we didn’t have a lot of time to spend there, ’cause our driving got a bit behind us… but we put in an order of food to-go, & bellied up to the bar to sample… Faithfull Ale!!! 🙂 Now, I’m not really a Pearl Jam fan, but my bestie Rebecca is, and she’s been so exctied to try this beer, which was brewed in honor of Pearl Jam’s 20th anniversary, since she first heard of it! They had only gotten it in to the brewpub 5 days prior, so we were VERY excited to be able to try it! Since we still had driving ahead of us, we opted to share a glass while we waited for our food!

I mean, besides the Faithfull… they had (duh) a pretty impressive tap list…

Jayd and I also each bought the 2 bottle-per-person allowance… one of which was earmarked for a very special girl… who was VERY excited to receive it on Monday morning at the office 🙂

Although our visit was short at Dogfish Head this time around, we were glad we were able to swing by!

From there, we headed over to the Cape May – Lewes ferry, and took the ferry over to Cape May, NJ! While we waited, and then ferried, we walked around snapping pix…

Waiting to board the ferry…

All aboard! 🙂

Ummmm… it was windy??? lol

We were invited up into the captains perch (??) by Captain Bob, who offered to take some pix for us! He and his crew even showed us some of the fun, fancy equipment…

Some, new-fangled….

(we got the bleeps, the sweeps, and the creeps!!!)

& some, old-fashioned! 🙂

(note, the glaring absence of “plaid”…)

And then, they blew our minds when they said that they had NO IDEA that a craft brewery had opened up in Cape May!!!

I promptly educated them on the ‘recent’ opening of Cape May Brewing Company, and told them to get their butts down to Cabana’s, post haste, to sample their brews! I mean, for shame…. I live in NYC & visit Cape May once a year, and even I knew about it! 😉

Anywho… we saw a beautiful sunset over the water as the ferry docked in Cape May…

… and we managed to make it back into the city around 9pm, which I think isn’t too shabby! Just shy of 36 hours, our road trip from FL to NYC was an amazing whirlwind of great tunes, hysterical local observations, fantastic new friends, amazing craft beer, gorgeous scenery, and one super fantabulous friend! I think that Jayd has cemented herself as my perfect, go-to road-trip gal-pal… we are super-de-duperly compatible traveling partners… and heck, we just have a blast together 🙂

And so… on to the next one 🙂
